A NEW MUSICAL BASED ON THE MOVIE "AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN."
In 1982 a timeless love story came along that claimed new audiences every year right up to the present. In over two decades the film “An Officer and A Gentleman” has never lost its relevance and continues to have the magic affect of making people fall in love with it every time they see it. Why does this 22-year-old story continue year after year to capture the hearts and minds of both men and women? Like all great classic stories, its theme is timeless. Men love it, because it’s a man’s journey through a crucible. Women love it for its unabashed romanticism. Part gritty reality and part Cinderella fantasy, this phenomenally successful film becomes an even more emotional human experience through the medium of live theater set in the world of today.
This classic modern-day, Cinderella story is about a working class boy and girl who must overcome their upbringing and personal weaknesses to grab the golden ring of life.
ZACK MAYO, who was raised above a Japanese whorehouse by an absentee father and a pair of young hookers, sets his sights on flying jets for the Navy. But can a kid from the streets with no code of ethics rise up to become an officer and a gentleman?
PAULA POKRIFKI, is a factory worker like her mother and grandmother before her, surrounded by people who believe that the only way out for a woman is to marry an officer from the local naval training school. Can a poor factory girl escape her damaged past and become a woman of integrity worthy of love?
ZACK MAYO is tested by the nearly inhuman rigors of Officer Candidate School. And SARGENT EMIL FOLEY, a terrifying drill sergeant, is determined to make him quit. Self-serving ZACK must learn how to be a friend, then a team player before he can become a leader.
Burdened by her parents’ mistakes and her friend’s bad example, PAULA must be willing to give up love so as not to loose her true self.
When ZACK and PAULA finally overcome the huge obstacles in their lives, including the death of ZACK’S friend SID, they are finally worthy of one another. And when ZACK graduates as an officer and goes to PAULA’S factory to rescue her from her dead-end life, the audience experiences one of the great love story moments in dramatic history.
